چکیده

A simplified model of ice-sheet behayiour is described. I t combines the assumptions of rapid ice flow, high viscous actiyation energy and realistic sediment-based sliding dynamics to form a non-linear diffusion-type equation which can display relaxation oscillations analogous to those of surging glaciers, and which may be relevant to large-scale surges of the Hudson Strait and Cabot Strait ice streams of the Laurentide ice sheet. When the physics of this model is applied to a laterally extensi\'e unidirectional ice flow, such as that in the Siple Coast of Antarctica, an appropriate mechanism may exist for the spon taneous generation of ice streams.

From cyclic ice streaming to Heinrich-like events: the grow-and-surge instability in the Parallel Ice Sheet Model

Here we report on a cyclic, physical ice-discharge instability in the Parallel Ice Sheet Model, simulating the flow of a three-dimensional, inherently buttressed ice-sheetshelf system which periodically surges on a millennial timescale. The thermomechanically coupled model on 1 km horizontal resolution includes an enthalpy-based formulation of the thermodynamics, a nonlinear stress-balance-base...

Large-scale instabilities of the Laurentide ice sheet simulated in a fully coupled climate-system model

[1] Heinrich events, related to large-scale surges of the Laurentide ice sheet, represent one of the most dramatic types of abrupt climate change occurring during the last glacial. Here, using a coupled atmosphere-ocean-biosphereice sheet model, we simulate quasi-periodic large-scale surges from the Laurentide ice sheet. The average time between simulated events is about 7,000 yrs, while the su...

Asymptotics with Small Exponent in a Model for Ice-sheet Surging

We study an equation which arises in a model describing the mechanism by which ice sheets periodically surge. The resulting ordinary differential equation looks deceptively simple, but has a complicated asymptotic character which is studied using an asymptotic approach and independent analysis. We place the emphasis on investigating the structure of the solution to a problem where a small param...

A Review of Recent Changes in Major Marine-Terminating Outlet Glaciers in Northern Greenland

Over the past two decades, mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) has accelerated and contributed to global sea level rise. This has been partly attributed to dynamic changes in marine terminating outlet glaciers. Outlet glaciers at the northern margin of the ice sheet drain 40% of its area but are comparatively less well-studied than elsewhere on the ice sheet (e.g., central-west or sou...
